The William Penn Poodle Club's Futurity was the first Poodle futurity in the United States, and it is believed to be the only remaining Poodle futurity.
A futurity is a celebration of the breeder's art, wherein breeders are challenged to nominate puppies before they are born. In effect, a breeder's Futurity entry says, "I think this is a really good breeding, and I'm putting my money where my mouth is!" The entry fee structure of the Futurity favors those breeders who nominate early; although puppies may be nominated and entered until four weeks before the Futurity is held, the longer a breeder waits, the higher the entry fees and penalties get.
The entry fee structure has assured nice cash prizes for past Futurity winners, who also compete for several old and beloved challenge trophies.
Because the emphasis of the Futurity is on breeders and their next generation of Poodles, professional handlers are permitted to participate only if they are the breeder and/or owner of the entry they handle.
The Three Steps to Entering the Futurity
Nominate the dam. If nominated before the puppies are whelped, the fee is $6.
Nominate the puppies. If nominated before the age of three months, the fee is $3 per puppy. Any number of puppies from the litter may be nominated.
Enter the nominated puppies. Final entry is $3 per puppy entered.
A Futurity is a celebration of the Breeder's Art, wherein many of the litters are nominated before they are even born, in effect saying "I know this is a great litter, so great in fact that I feel confident in nominating them before they are even born!" Can they be nominated after they are born? Sure, but that's when the penalty fees come in, and how the size of the payouts grow. I deally, a litter is nominated before whelping ($6) and each 'promising' puppy is nominated before the age of three months (fee $3 per puppy) and then the final entry fee of $3 per puppy which would come to $12 for a single puppy from the litter, $18 for two puppies from the same litter and so on(for a really "hot" litter!)
BUT things don't always happen in a timely fashion, and what we intend to do, and what actually happens can differ. You can still enter if the litter has already been born, or even if you purchase a promising show puppy. See "Fee Schedule" to determine the proper fees; and remember that step 1 is only due ONCE for each litter, not each puppy.
